Ku Klux Klan Flag

(The K.K.K.)

The Grand Ensign was the real flag of the Ku Klux Klan.  In Klan prescripts the flag was described to be a triangle that was 3' by 5' madde of Yellow material with a 3'' scaloped border of red material.  The original was hand painted with a Latin motto and European flying dragon colored black.  The Latin motto was- Quod Semper, Quod Ubique, Quod Ab Omnibus.  In english it means, "what always, what everywhere, what by all is held to be true.  Only two surviving flags can tell us what the KKK banner looked like.  One is in Pulski, Tennessee owned by thr Tennessee Historical Society at Nashville; the other is owned by the Confederate Museum in Richmond, Virginia.

Founded in 1866, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) extended into almost every southern state by 1870 and became a vehicle for white southern resistance to the Republican Party's Reconstruction.  Its members, a group of ex-confederate veterans, founded the “Invisible Empire” or the Ku Klux Klan in Pulaski Tennessee, May 1866; also known by their initials, and with their name being touted as the "sound of a rifle being cocked.”  The members waged an underground campaign of intimidation and violence directed at white and black Republican leaders. Though Congress passed legislation designed to curb Klan terrorism, the organization saw its primary goal–the reestablishment of white supremacy–fulfilled through Democratic victories in state legislatures across the South in the 1870s. After a period of decline, white Protestant activist groups revived the Klan in the early 20th century, burning crosses and staging rallies, parades and marches denouncing immigrants, Catholics, Jews, blacks and organized labor. The civil rights movement of the 1960s also saw a surge of Ku Klux Klan activity, including bombings of black schools and churches and violence against black and white activists in the South.  Their activities were largely responsible for returning the states of Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina to white rule.  Klansmen came up with a flag.  It was to be three feet by five feet and triangular in shape. It was to be yellow material with a red scalloped border.  Hand painted on it in black was to be a European flying dragon (dracovolans) and the Latin motto: Quod Semper, Quod Ubique, Quod Ab Omnibus(What always, what everywhere, what by all is held to be true.). The Ku Klux Klan terrorized white activists for a while but the violent methods utilized by the Klan were considered excessive by Ex-Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, and he ordered the organization to be disbanded in 1869; though small groups still remained and popped up every once and a while.
